Critic tasting note: (1904 vintage) "It’s hard to get your head around this: A 1904 d’Yquem. Some wine collector friends in Zurich dug out this treasure from a cellar and generously shared it at a dinner back in September. It was reminiscent of tawny port in color with yellow and caramel hues. There were intriguing aromas of toffee and caramel and honey. The dried grapes came to the fore soon enough along with smoked meat undertones. On the palate, it was full-bodied and medium sweet. Indeed, it didn’t taste sweet at first, but eventually it began to express this too. The label came off in my hands it was so old." - James Suckling

Beautiful dry, warm weather throughout the growing season. A few light showers in early September brought on noble rot. The first pass starting on 17th September was very generous, and the grapes had good sugar. 22 mm of rain fell on the 26th of September and 18 mm in early October, prior to a window of opportunity (dry weather), that was propitious to several passes with opulently rich grapes. A vintage combining quality and quantity.

1904 blessed a number of regions with a very fine vintage. Bordeaux had a fantastic year, producing a number of brilliant wines; so much so that a rare few may even still drink well today. Port also enjoyed a spectacular vintage, which was widely declared by all the main Port houses. The Ports tended to be fine, elegant and c...
