I absolutely adore the 1998 Dom Pérignon at this stage in development, as this was a marvelous surprise to see how balanced and seductive this wine is now. Showing a slightly lower viscosity than the ’96, the 1998 Dom Pérignon greets you with a wonderfully nutty and musty bouquet, followed by great tension and linear progression on the mid-palate. The wonderful sense of freshness complements the nutty, wild mushroom, peat moss and orchard fruit flavors. This has a wonderful saline streak that runs through the exceedingly long finish. While marvelous now, this has at least fifteen years left.

Medium deep straw colour with fine bubbles. The nose is mature and complex with spicy notes, nougat, candied fruit, roasted nuts and smoke. The palate has good power, intense flavours of ripe stone fruit, spices, nougat and a fine creamy mousse, good freshness, rather low dosage, some nutty notes on the finish, very long and lingering finish.

This is a wine that thrives on tension between its structure, opulence, elegance and poise. It is certainly ripe and opulent, but it is so well balanced and layered with acidity, and flavors of almonds, orange peel and kiwi fruits. It will certainly age.

Fine (small), continuous mousse previews a clean fresh brioche, nutty nose with citrus, cherry, creamy, lemon aromas. Dry, elegant, crisp, and full-bodied on the palate. Fine baked green apple, nutty, toasty, lemon peel flavours streaked with floral, mineral, pear skin notes. Long, elegant and crisp with finesse. Should age well for 3-10 years or enjoyable now.
