The spring was warm and dry, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. The summer was marked by long sunny periods, interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The unexpectedly perfect weather just before the harvest compensated for the heavy rains of late August and early September. The vines were in good health, and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness. The harvest began between September 12 and 28.

The presence of the wine on the palate is immediately captivating. Paradoxically concentrated yet creamy, it is energetic and warm in the mouth, focusing on the fruit, then gradually taking on more profound bass notes. The whole holds its note perfectly, intensively, with just a subtle, elegant hint of underlying bitterness.

(2018) Wind currents from the north worked to dehydrate the grapes on the vine. This is a super-concentrated vintage in Champagne, although it appears that many wine-makers haven’t grasped the oxidative nature of the vintage and protected the wines accordingly. Nevertheless, it is a grand vintage, and a grand Dom Pérignon. Although I have experienced some bottle variation, the best examples of ’02 have neutron-star-like density, immense richness and a long, honeyed sweetness. We will need to wait for the complexity and finesse, but it will come, so my score of 96/100 is based on potential. At time of this review? Maybe 93/100. Drink 2022-2042. (The “P2” has just been disgorged ready for release in 2019).

Minerality essence, citrus, tropical fruit, floral, honeysuckle and toast aromas prepare you for the complex, concentrated, sweet yellow fruit and stone filled palate. Creamy, but not as flashy, opulent or open as the 1996 was at the same stage. There seems to be more structure and minerality to the 2002. This needs at least a few years or longer to come together. 95 Points

Radiant gold yellow, vigorous and persistent bubbles. Fine toasty notes of brioche and hazelnut, fine floral touch pervaded by white peach and orange zest nuances with a hint of vanilla. On the palate full-bodied, elegant, fine and vibrant acidity, racy, fine yellow tropical fruit nuances, complex, mineral finish, almost salty in the aftertaste. Incredibly multifaceted with an animated finish, immense length, expressive aftertaste and fine spicy notes. Will benefit from further bottle ageing.

Superbe, komplexe Nase von Gebäck, Blumen, Kräutern und Gewürzen, verführerisch und dezent; von grosser Delikatesse im Mund, von schon fast dekadenter Eleganz, abgerundet und rund und reif und cremig und von perfekter Harmonie, mit einem nie gekannten, einmalig schönen Kräuterfinale; einer der grössten je verkosteten Dom Pérignon auf der Höhe der legendärsten Jahre.
