2018 Vintage Tasted: Mar 2021

Full disclosure: Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, which comprise 99 percent of the blend of this wine, are among my least favorite varieties because, when converted to wine, they often display power and little else. So, imagine my surprise when I discovered how well Dry Creek Vineyard manages them. To be sure, it a boisterous wine, but one that is not overdone or flamboyant. It reminds of the classic Zinfandel of decades ago before they became overblown monsters. This one has polish. The briary, rambunctious flavors are kept in bounds. Drink now with barbeque, lamb studded with garlic. You can’t find a food that will overpower this wine. Zinfandel haters, you will love it. (Michael Apstein)

2017 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2020

Full disclosure, Zinfandel is one of my least favorite wines. Petit Sirah runs a close second because both usually are impossibly overdone wines. So, I shuddered when I read the blend: Zinfandel (76%), Petit Sirah (22%) and Carignane. But that’s why you taste. Dry Creek Vineyard has a stunning track record with their Zinfandels, especially their Old Vine bottling, which they define as coming from vines of more than 50 years of age. Their website proclaims that many of the vines are over a century old and some have been around for 130 years. Old vines typically provide smaller yields of higher quality fruit, imparting complexity to the wine. That’s the case with this Old Vine Zinfandel. Briary and spicy, it handles the 14.9% stated alcohol effortlessly. Balanced and neither over the top nor hot, it’s classic full-bodied Zinfandel, but with elegance. (Michael Apstein)

The wine’s concentration and its complex amalgam of flavors is reason enough to seek it out, but the fact that you’re drinking history adds to the pleasure. This Zinfandel, made using grapes from vines the winery says average 90 years of age, is pretty and polished. It's surprisingly light in body, with a silky, transparent mouthfeel, but the flavors are very complex. The usual wild berry and tobacco flavors are apparent, but there are extra notes of espresso, cocoa, sweet herb, beef jerky and an extravagant array of dusty Asian spices.

They say the vines average 80 years of age, which means who knows where those old roots have explored. For that matter, who knows what the grape varieties really are. The wine is the least fruity of the winery's current Zins. While it shows berry-cherry and licorice flavors, it's notable for hard-to-describe earthy, mineral and mushroomy tastes that are interesting and unique.

Dark and dramatically rich, with blackberry jam, cherry-pie filling, milk chocolate and cinnamon spice flavors, this polished wine has gorgeously fine tannins. It could use greater acidity for structure, though, because it's very soft and melted, which makes all that fruit taste sugary sweet.

This is a medium bodied red Zinfandel. It really wasn’t for me it didn’t have a Lotta jam I like big and bold and fruity red Zinfandel. I purchased this at Costco I would much prefer Saldo From the prisoner wine company it’s so much better Zinfandel.
