Eberle Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Baked black cherry, black plum and shaved licorice make for a thick aromatic profile on the nose of this estate bottling by the legend Gary Eberle and winemaker Chris Eberle (no relation, really). This is a spot-on Cabernet from regional pioneer Gary Eberle’s stable of wines. A sturdy backbone carries blackberry, cassis, faint dried herbs and mild spice through a long finish where the fruit sings clearly. Very nicely made by Chris Eberle — not related by blood to Gary, but definitely related in philosophy to the founder’s winery, where over-delivering quality for price has always been a hallmark. Caramelized blueberry and a sweet cedar woody aroma makes for a very inviting nose on this bottling from regional pioneer Gary Eberle. The palate is full of flavor, with blackberry syrup, balsamic fig vinaigrette and cola spice. A judicious acidity holds it all together.

Quite dark in the glass, this bottling by regional pioneer Gary Eberle shows blueberry, black plum, dense lilacs and wet slate on the nose. Black currant and other black and deep-purple fruits pop on the dense palate, with graphite, dried herbs and black pepper giving depth on this dark expression.

Coming from Gary Eberle's pioneering, 31-year-old vineyard, this presents fresh blueberries, smoke, cedar and a hearty mocha touch on the nose. It's thick on the palate but cut with strong acidity, showing flavors of chocolate-covered espresso bean, blackberry fruit and coffee grinds that last deep into the finish.

Here’s the thing with Eberle Winery — they continue to over-deliver quality at reasonable prices. There’s always a temptation to make a money grab when you know you’ve got something special, but Gary Eberle has remained loyal to his customer base and kept the best things within reach. Winemaker Ben Mayo hits all my markers here, with textbook spicy-side varietal character, fine structure, plush feel, and complexity that carries through a long rich finish and keeps you returning to the glass. Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Intensive Anklänge von Cassis und schwarzen Beeren, angenehme, gut integrierte Holzwürze. Am Gaumen mittlere Komplexität, elegant, schlanke Textur, dunkles Fruchtkonfit, Johannisbeeeren, frisch strukturiert, kein Blockbuster, aber dennoch mit guter Länge ausgestattet.

The Eberle Winery has a long-standing reputation for its age-worthy cabernet sauvignon, but the kudos are usually reserved for the consistently outstanding estate cab and the always remarkable reserve cab. The best-kept secret in Paso, however, is the ‘Vineyard Selection’ cabernet that relies upon grapes from throughout the Paso region as well a portion from the Eberle property. This wine is made in a fruit-driven style, is always reasonably prices, and it’s delicious vintage after vintage. Proof of that fact is its track record at major wine competitions, where it usually does well. This vintage took a gold medal at the 2013 Winemaker Challenge in January and it’s a pure delight, particularly at an attractive price point below $20. (Robert Whitley)

Eberle brings their signature touch of supreme drinkability to this youthful Cabernet. Strikes you for sheer balance, a wine that doesn't demand to star at the table. Shows classic, pleasant flavors of blackberries, black currants and anise.

There is no bigger believer in the quality of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon than Gary Eberle. His estate Cabs are among the finest made in California, and this “Vineyard Selection” Cab, produced from purchased grapes, isn’t too shabby, either. Plenty of currant and blueberry character with hints of minerals and sandalwood. Full body, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Slightly hollow mid-palate but attractive. Better in 2013.

This Cab is made in a leaner, earthier style you can describe as food friendly. It has complex flavors of blackberries, black currants and coffee. For those critics who knock California Cabernet as too ripe, this will come as a pleasant surprise. Drink now–2013.

Gary Eberle's Paso Robles Cabernet has been consistent over many years, and his '06 bottling shows off his understanding. It's a soft, pleasant wine that offers waves of blackberry jam, black currant, cocoa and cedar flavors, with an elegantly drinkable mouthfeel. Nice with barbecued steak and garlic-rosemary roasted new potatoes.
