2022 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2024
Back in the 1960s, Robert Drouhin, head of the venerable Beaune-based firm of Joseph Drouhin, had the vision to buy vineyard land in Chablis when the area was in crisis. At the time, many thought he was foolish, but today it’s clear he was a visionary. With almost 100 acres of vineyards in Chablis, Drouhin now is a major producer there. Importantly, they have a separate winery, Vaudon, there so the grapes do not need to be transported back to Beaune for vinification. The Premier Cru Vaillons, like all of Drouhin Vaudon’s Chablis wines, have the Drouhin elegance that allows the flinty minerality of the soil to speak clearly. The excellent 2022 vintage has imbued Chablis with a touch more depth and ripeness without losing any of its racy energetic character. Drink now or cellar for five to ten years and watch magic evolve in the bottle.( Michael Apstein)
2020 Vintage
Tasted: Feb 2023
Drouhin has been around since the 1880s, with the current generation's great grandfather starting the business as a negociant. In the early 20th century the family started as winemakers, purchasing and planting their first vineyards in the early 1960s. This 1er Cru comes from Vaillons, on the southwest bank of Chablis, facing east, and its kimmeridgian limestone. The 30 year old estate vines are biodynamically farmed (since 1999) and supplemented with purchased fruit. After a slow pressing and ferment in stainless, this remained on lees for 8 months until bottling. Tight lemon pith and peel streaks across the amply saline palate, scented with tiny white blossoms, and shaped with a buzzy limestone jacket, structuring this through a lingering mineral / saline finish. Lovely poise, energy, and tension, this 2020 is shining at present, and will hold over coming years. (Treve Ring).

For the ripe 2019 vintage this has positively austere and very stony character, which makes it stand out from the crowd. Very flinty with a delicate lemon-blossom note. Steely finish that gives you a radically mineral Chablis experience. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

From 30 year old left bank vines, biodynamically farmed since the 1990s, this Vaillons sings of typicity. Fermentation and aging in stainless for 8 months only preserves the crispness of the Premier Cru fruit. Creamy perfumed pear is livened with lemon pith and green apple, seasoned with a lick of flint, and extended with a shimmery kimmeridgian buzz. The flinty salinity balances out the Drouhin polish smartly. (Treve Ring).
2017 Vintage
Tasted: Nov 2019
Drouhin has been around since the 1880s doing business as a négociant before planting their vineyards in the early 1960s. From the south-facing slopes of the left bank, this 1er cru Vaillons presents linearly with green apple, pear, and citrus pith dusted in chalk. A stainless steel ferment lends a further steely, cool, demeanour balanced by creamy, nutty lees in the finish. Classic Chablis built to age. Taste through 2023, with oysters, of course. (Anthony Gismondi).

There are some very attractive, fresh peach and lemon aromas here with wet-stone complexity. The palate has a fresh, chiseled and nicely saline, mineral edge with plenty of fleshy peaches and lemons. Mouthwatering, fresh finish. Drink or hold.

Drouhin has been around since the 1880s, with the current generation's great grandfather starting the business as a negociant. In the early 20th century the family started as winemakers, purchasing and planting their first vineyards in the early 1960s. From the left bank's south facing slopes of 1er cru Vaillons, this well straddles the line of green apple, lemon pith nimbleness and shimmer, with a complete core of chalk, quince and pear kissed centre. This streams along with a riff of sea salts, pear skin to texture. This wine was fermented and aged in stainless, on lees until racked and bottled in summer 2016. (Treve Ring).

Some impressive fruit in this Vaillons, which has a gentle stone edge, ripe peaches and hints of honeysuckles. The palate has a sturdy core of concentrated citrus fruits. The acidity is nice and bright. A tight finish. Drink or hold to 2022.

A restrained style of Vaillons from a challenging vintage with brisk lemon, white asparagus and salted wild herbs. A lean 1er cru look for lively Asian pear, green fig and artichoke notes atop a thin cushion of unripe pear and light lees all straightened by a backbone of lemon rind acidity. Flake salt closes out the lingering finish, making it a choice pair for raw west coast oysters. Ready to drink now through 2018. (Anthony Gismondi and Treve Ring).

This is a balanced wine with touches of honey and toast, along with ripe yellow and white fruits that are cut by a salty structure. Great acidity runs through the wine, giving a tight, steely, very pure aftertaste. Drink from 2017.

Floral, butter, grassy, baked green apple, light lees, waxy, matchstick, seashell aromas. Dry, fresh, juicy, elegant palate with green apple, nutty, floral, grassy, spicy, light lees flavours with a touch of gooseberry and seashell. Good now but will age well for 2-3 years. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).
