This is Lafite. Prune and spices, with a cedar and wet tobacco character on the nose. Even tea. Full and rich with a dark China tea and cedar character. Just a hint of chocolate. Opens in the glass like a genie. Amazing.

Kräftiges Rubingranat, zart unterockert, breiterer Wasserrand. In der Nase dunkle Beerenfrucht, zarte Minze, reife Zwetschkenfrucht, feiner Schokoladeanklang, nach Eukalyptus, etwas Honigkaramell, etwas Velours und exotische Gewürze. Am Gaumen frisch, rotbeerige Nuancen, delikat, nach Herzkirschen, Cassis, hat Rasse, angenehme Zitrusanklänge, glänzt mit Frische und salziger Mineralik, ein verführerischer, delikater Wein, bleibt gut haften, etwas raue Tannine, großes Reifepotenzial, insgesamt zurückhaltend. (2000) The colour is a very dark, solid ruby with a warm amber rim. The nose on this wine is just sensational. Big, sweet, vegetal fruit with deeply scented blackcurrant aromas emerging as well as baked plums and a background of cedar wood. The palate is just a little lean. The tannins are very, very grippy with quite high acidity too and the whole effect is very drying with fruit not showing through to give real integration and balance. Many tasters thought this too young from the grip of the tannins and the quite youthful colour. That may well be right, but I have tasted all the other 1st growth '83s and the super-seconds and since these are without exception already mature, I just have a niggling doubt whether this will come good in the many years it still needs to shed those ferociously grippy tannins. Wonderful nose, but just a little worrying on the palate - though I could well be proved wrong.

Open this wine for my 40th birthday, I was getting worried that it as past his peak, it did take 2hours to open up even though it was decanted straight away. But what an amazing wine, smooth with a medium body but leaving long lasting flavour in you mouth. Best wine I ever tried. 99/100

1 hour of air to start, slowly drank over the evening. Good, but definitely on its way down. Oak, dark fruit, tobacco, earth, muddled herbal notes, berries. Nose is excellent, palate isn’t as nice.
