The fruit on the palate starts as a brooding dark berry note that is lifted by lively acidity. The palate is initially lean and cedary but develops fabulously in the mouth revealing lively red-fruits that endure superbly. Vintage Notes: 2005 was the fourth consecutive year to have a deficit in rainfall, but the drought began very early, at the end of May, which allowed the vines to adapt by reducing their leaf area. The very hot weather in June and July gave way to progressively cooler weather in August and the cool nights allowed good acidity levels to be maintained, resulting in slow steady ripening. A year of atypical weather but in the end ideal for the production of healthy, very ripe grapes with wonderful freshness.

The 2005 Lafite is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. Deep garnet-brick in color, it slips sensuously from the glass with eager-to-please scents of creme de cassis, Christmas cake, and cedar chest, giving way to hints of Indian spices, sweaty leather, and pencil shavings. The mineral-laced, medium-bodied palate is elegant and shimmery, delivering firm tannins and a soft-spoken finish. Delivering a mature, wonderfully evocative experience now, it is well within its drinking window and should cellar to 2045+.

Still in its infancy, the wine needs time to soften, open, and expand, so if you are lucky enough to have a bottle, patience is a virtue here. Drink from 2030-2065.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, faint watery edge. On the nose somewhat restrained roasted aromas, delicate roasted plum, inviting berry confit, orange zest, fine tobacco nuances, smoky, cedary savouriness. On the palate dark berry fruit, cherry, vivid tannins, which are well integrated, but at the same time still demanding, at the moment somewhat closed, sweet roasted aromas, pleasant freshness. Future potential, great, complex wine.

Initially dense, almost black enough to be attacked with a knife. But then it becomes apparent that this is a beautifully integrated, balanced wine, bringing together power, with the hallmark Lafite style and poise. In the end, you have a wine that promises an impressive aging potential along with delicious black currant fruits, acidity and a layer of striking tannins. A deep, dark rub-red color, with red-purple tinges at the rim. Aromas are restrained dark fruits with touches of liquorice & well-integrated toasty oak.
