Vintage Notes: The beginning of the growth cycle was a tricky period due to a rather warm, very wet spring. The teams had to be particularly vigilant in order to protect the vines. Fine, stable weather returned in June and continued throughout the summer. In fact conditions became drought like, interspersed in July, August and September with welcome periods of light rain. Plenty of sunshine, with temperatures that were high without becoming scorching, and fairly cool nights enabled slow ripening that pushed the start of the harvests back to the end of September. Exceptionally favourable weather conditions, crowned by harvests in the sun, made for a vintage that was certain to be outstanding

Deep dark ruby garnet colour with purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Starts somewhat restrained, ripe dark berries, delicate tobacco nuances, some liquorice, light precious wood nuances, a hint of mint in the background. Complex, juicy, pronouncedly fruity texture, ripe heart cherries, mineral and taut on the finish, already approachable, has great length, with 17% Merlot, which is quite high for Lafite, now already significantly more accessible than expected, today it is only 7-8% on average.

Elegant, fresh, vibrant, lively, focused and refined, there is a beautiful purity to the fruit found here. Classic Pauillac here, but the wine is also lush and almost opulent in nature. Medium/full-bodied, with delicious array of red and black fruits, tobacco leaf, crushed stone, smoke and crisp red fruits in the end note, this beauty demands at least 15 more years to start delivering its true potential. The wine was made from blending 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and .5% Cabernet Franc. This is the highest percentage of Merlot in the blend since 1995. The wine reached 13% alcohol.

Cool menthol, spice and smoky, liquorice notes. Possible TCA issue. The palate is dense with glossy, cassis and tobacco, black olive and cedar flavours. Dry, firm elegant, if like most first growths far too much oak with low fruit. Again the sample may have been suffering from a small amount of TCA. The price is crazy taking this wine out of the hands of aficionados and leaving it to the rich and famous. Wolf Blass Master Blend Classification Montreal. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).
