BOURGOGNE: We eased gently into winter, but the mild weather gave way to very cold temperatures at the beginning of February, and hard frosts caused a bit of damage in some areas. March was far milder, allowing budbreak to begin early. Despite this vigorous start to the growing season, a cooler April slowed growth right down. Two episodes of frost in April and another late episode in mid-May caused damage to some vines, although the extent of this damage was dependent on the vigour of the growth in each case. Pressure from fungal diseases was, very high, and the succession of days with heavy rainfall with those with warm, sunny conditions exacerbated the problem. Flowering took place at a time when the weather was alternating between heavy rainfall and cold days. The bunches, therefore, were relatively light in terms of ber ries due tothe effects of coulure and millerandage. The weather continued to be chaotic throughout summer, with several thunder y stor bringing hail to the region.
