For a moderate price, here is Cote de Nuits complexity, earthy and floral, and wonderful sour cherry fruit. All of this is underlined by elegant tannins and mineral energy on the medium-bodied palate. Impressive polish in the long finish. Drink or hold.

Le vin a une couleur jaune citron pâle. Le nez est parfumé, boisé et épicé. Il exprime les notes de vanille, une fine touche de caramel et d’amande toasté, ainsi que des notes de fruits à noyau juteux (pêche jaune, abricot), de poire au sirop, de pomme verte, de melon, ainsi que des notes acidulées de citron jaune, de zeste de citron confite et de fleurs blanches (acacia, fleur de pommier). En bouche, le vin offre de la rondeur et une texture onctueuse, ainsi qu’un bel équilibre grâce à une agréable amertume et une acidité rafraichissante. Il exprime les notes de citron jaune frais, de pêche blanche, d’abricot croquant, d’ananas frais, de pomme verte écrasée, de fleurs blanches (acacia, fleur de pommier) et des délicates touches boisées et épicées (toasté, vanille) ainsi qu’une touche de brioche toastée. Un vin persistant, avec une belle acidité et une amertume rafraichissante grâce aux notes de pamplemousse et de citron vert en fin de bouche.

2020 Vintage Tasted: Mar 2023

Burgundy lovers have discovered the charms of Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Côtes de Nuits. Prices have risen as a result and are poised to continue their climb because the village is in the process of having some vineyards certified as 1er Cru. So, now is the time to act by buying the luscious 2020s. And Latour’s is a good place to start. Bright red cherry-like notes complement herbal ones. Suave tannins make it easy to enjoy now. It displays real Côtes de Nuits character at a Côtes de Beaune price. (Michael Apstein)

2019 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2022

Wines from Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Côte de Nuits, are finally getting the attention they deserve. French wine regulators are evaluating which vineyards within the Marsannay appellation will qualify for premier cru status. Once that happens, prices will accelerate even faster, much like what has happened since Pouilly-Fuissé vineyards received official premier cru classification. Even now, I’ve seen prices of Marsannay from well-regarded growers commanding prices of $60+. All of which explains why I’m so enthusiastic about this one from Maison Louis Latour, a top-notch Beaune-based negociant. Less prestigious appellations, like Marsannay, benefitted from the warmth of the 2019 vintage, which explains why this one has a healthy balance of ripe fruit and earthy herbal notes. The Latour style that brings out the acidity in the wines acts as a perfect balance, imbuing the wine with freshness and verve. Real Côte de Nuits Burgundy for under $40 is rare, so my advice is to stock up. It is remarkably approachable now. (Michael Apstein)

Such an enticing sour-cherry nose with subtle leafy and earthy notes. Such a joyful expression of this very underrated terroir. Such a zesty pinot noir with a long, crisp finish, in which the gentle tannins and lively acidity are beautifully integrated. Drink or hold.

2018 Vintage Tasted: Dec 2020

The flinty promise of slight reduction is the first notion on the nose of this wine, followed by a bright, juicy red-cherry tone. The palate also has that appetizing flintiness surrounding ripe, almost fleshy cherry that sits around a core of freshness. Subtle, juicy tannins appear on the appealing finish. Anne Krebiehl MW

Beautiful fresh, bright fruit with cherry and ripe-strawberry character, as well as hints of spices. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a pretty finish. So delicious to drink now.

Aromas of strawberries, toffee, smoke and earth. Medium body, fresh and bright acidity, medium chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Linear and bright for the vintage. Drink after 2020, but already approachable.

2016 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2018

Quite a fresh and lively style for Marsannay. This nonetheless has quite a firm tannic core. Long, clean finish with some earthy complexity. Drink or hold.

This is ripe and fruity with attractive red-fruit flavors and a touch of tannins to keep it all in place. The wine is soft with just a layer of tannin and plenty of red cherries at the end.

(2017) This is a négociant wine from Louis Latour, where growers on long-term contracts supply the Pinot Noir grapes and Latour makes the wine. From 30-year-old vines and unoaked, it has a haunting, expressive fragrance, briar and stalkiness, mushroom and then also clear cherry and red berry fruit. A touch of pepper and herbs adds more interest. Very fresh on the palate, there's a lovely juiciness to this wine, more of that pert red fruit and nicely precise tannins and acids to finish. It's a lovely village Burgundy in a restrained but fruit-forward style. Watch the video for more information.

2014 Vintage Tasted: Nov 2016

With the prices of Burgundy going through the roof, it’s always a delight to find authentic red Burgundy, especially from the revered Côte de Nuits, that is affordable. Marsannay, the most northern appellation of the Côte de Nuits, is practically a suburb of Dijon, resulting in a constant battle between vineyards and suburban housing. Fortunately, at least for now, good Marsannay can still be found at reasonable prices. Latour, one of the Burgundy’s top négociants, clearly has good sources for Marsannay because year in and year out theirs shows well. This 2014, with its juicy angularity and earthy flavors, has that savory component that makes red Burgundy unique. Not a packed or opulent Pinot Noir-based wine, it’s the real deal for people who want an introduction to Burgundy without taking out a second mortgage. Delightful now, I put it into a “roast chicken” category of wine. (Michael Apstein)

Marsannay, now practically a suburb of Dijon, is the northern most outpost of the Côte de Nuits. With no classified vineyards — but deserving of some — the village offers the best value for red wines from the entire Côte d’Or, in my opinion. Latour’s 2012 is simply marvelous, delivering bright fruit flavors atop a woodsy savory base all enrobed in mild tannins. This is an unbelievable bargain for the enjoyment it delivers. Try it with a roast chicken and sautéed mushrooms. (Michael Apstein)

(2012) Marsannay in the Côte de Nuits was granted its own appellation as a village wine only in 1987 and produces white, red and rosé wines. This red example pours a very pale ruby colour, almost like a deeply coloured rosé. It has a charming and quite seductive nose, layered with scents of damp autumnal woodland and spice, over soft strawberry and raspberry fruit. In the mouth it is not the plumpest or most giving of styles, the acidity and tannins really quite lean, and whilst that adds a food-friendly structure, the wine is just a little thin, a little short.

2009 Vintage Tasted: Jun 2011

The 2009 red Burgundies are sensational. The extra warmth of the vintage helped the “lesser” appellations, such as Marsannay, even more than the most famous crus, since wines from lesser sites can be thin and acidic in cooler years. Well, this 2009 Marsannay is a hit. With good ripeness and a charming strawberry-like fruitiness coupled with leafy notes, you know you are drinking real Burgundy. Despite Latour’s producing a consistently excellent wine from this village over the last decade, the price has barely budged because it’s still Marsannay, showing that the price of Burgundy is all too often based on the label, not the wine. So take advantage of it. It will transform a simple roast chicken. (Michael Apstein)

2006 Vintage Tasted: Jan 2009

While it's light, this Marsannay, from the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits, gives warm, soft pleasure. The fruit has fresh berry and sweet jam flavors, followed by a layer of dryness that is not excessive and an attractive lively finish.
