Lilacs, roses, violets, and white flowers combine to propel the aromatics before unveiling the wealth of black cherries, blackberries, espresso, cocoa, and nutmeg. A wine of finesse and charm, the palate enjoys layers of sweet, spicy, black, and dark red fruits. There is lift and energy, coupled with a relaxed palate presence, allowing you to enjoy this in its youth as well as age it for decades. The almost zesty finish refreshes and resonates with its aromatic profile and elegance. Clearly, this is one of the stars of the vintage. The wine blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 12.8% ABV. 3.61 pH, 14% press wine. 46% of the crop was placed into the Grand Vin. Picking took place September 23 - October 8. The key to their success here was the ability to wait for ripeness and selection. Drink from 2030-2055.

Really impressive depth, concentration and perfume this year, with fine tannins. Lots of violets, red flowers, black cherries and currants. Full-bodied and seriously structured, with impeccable freshness and a very long finish. Dense and powerful for the vintage, with tension, vibrations, good concentration and a tannin framework. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

Château Margaux is easily one of the most iconic Bordeaux producers thanks to its First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Official Wine Classification, subsequent cult-like status, and consistently excellent quality. Château Margaux wines are made to age long after bottling. 35 years after harvest, this 1989 vintage is still showing signs of power that would have long disappeared from other wines. The wine shines with fresh blackberry, black currant, and black cherries while tobacco and leather traditional tertiary notes from bottle aging play an equal hand in the flavor profile. Château Margaux’s acidity and tannins have moderated when compared to its youth but are still supporting the fruit and body structure of the wine. Margaux’s Grand Vin demonstrates stunning elegance and is absolutely deserving of its top-tier status in Bordeaux. You can still find the 1989 vintage on the market, largely thanks to its collector status, and it is drinking excellently. Enjoy now through 2032.( Vince Simmon)

A super wine, and even better if I took its 90 years of age into consideration, this was a pleasure to enjoy. With the essence of cedar, cranberries, pipe tobacco, cigar box, and cassis in the perfume, that was quite the show. On the palate, the wine was as good, or better with its elegance, refinement, and charm, leaving you with ample silky, earthy, soft, red fruits that felt great, with their patina of age. Perfectly stored bottles like this... Drink from 2025-2034.

I have never encountered a wild Margaux like this. Cassis and blackcurrant aromas with hints of crushed stones and bitter chocolate. The palate is full-bodied but not heavy or ponderous. Really well-structured with fantastic fine tannins that tighten on the palate, giving this so much liveliness and length. Compacted and energetic at the end. 92% cabernet sauvignon and 6% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Exceptional. Best after 2029.

Mind-blowing in every sense of the word. At 95 years of age, the perfume takes sticking your nose into the glass to find the dried roses, mint, tobacco, dried cherries, strawberries, and red plums. Medium-bodied, elegant, refined, soft, pure, lifted, vibrant, and while light, there is an incredibly sensual texture that hit all the right notes, again, and again. Wow, this a life-changing bottle. Speechless, and grateful. Drink now, and who knows.

Black cherry, blackberry, spice, violets, and with just a hint of oak which will shortly become fully integrated into the nose. On the palate, the wine is silky, creamy, vibrant, elegant, and fresh. It is the lift to the fruit paired with the refined, creamy tannins that is the signature of this vintage. The wine is on the discreet side and warrants a bit of swirling before you become involved with this beauty. Give it 5 years or so and it will be even better. The wine blends 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, 13.1% ABV, pH 3.64. The Grand Vin was produced using only 36% of the harvest. Picking took place September 24 - October 13. Drink from 2029-2060.

The purity of fruit here is terrific, with redcurrants, blackcurrants, licorice, lead pencil and hints of fresh basil—so aromatic—that follow through to a full body with creamy, round tannins and lots of volume and fluidity in the center-palate for the vintage. Very structured at the end. 87% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Leave this for at least five or six years. Try after 2030.

In competition for wine of the vintage, with a single swirl, you find roses violets, lilacs, black, with red cherries, espresso, cocoa, and boysenberries in the haunting aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is silky, velvety, energetic, and lively. Instead of the weight and intensity found in the 2022, the 2023 focuses on its purity, refinement, length, vivacity, and sensual textures. The seamless finish resonates for 60 seconds, leaving you with lingering waves of incredibly sweet, and pure cherries. Part of the reason for the success of the vintage at Margaux is due to the combination of the amount of rain, and even more importantly, the timing of the rains, which helped the vines reach a better level of maturity. It is interesting to note that macerations were slow, and easy, with some vats taking 28 days due to the lower ABV levels. The wine blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13.1% ABV. 3.61 pH, 15% press wine. 41% of the crop was placed into the Grand Vin. Picking took place September 11-October 6. The length of the harvest was due to intermittent periods of rain during the harvest, so picking stopped and started, which is another key to the success in 2023. Drink from 2030-2065.

The aromas in this young Margaux are so primary, reminding me of grape must fermenting in the vat, then turning to perfumes and flowers. Violets and roses. Full-bodied but it comes across as so agile and bright, with vivid acidity that makes the wine crunchy and linear. As Alexis, one of the owners of Margaux said, this really shows the DNA of the estate. Weightless. One of the wines of the vintage. 3.6 pH. Blend of 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

It is an immensely sophisticated, elegant wine full of grace and finesse, with fabulous complexity and mid-palate. The aftertaste lasts more than one minute. This wine will surely give the 2022 vintage a run for its money!

The wine has a deep, dark, but not quite opaque, black-ruby color. Aromas of cedar & chocolate overlay open red-plum fruit. The wine is medium to full bodied with fresh acidity leaving the fruit lively & juicy. Attractive violet perfumes open on the finish after the fine cedary tannic structure. The finish lasts well & the alcohol gives hints of warmth, without overpo. The structure is closing the fruit a little at present but lovely perfumes are evident. 11/24 DCAMW

Deep, dark, almost opaque ruby-red with a vivid purple rim. Pure vanilla overlays opulent, rich, red-fruit aromas. Fresh acidity supports the perfumed red-fruit from the outset. The wine has a creamy texture & cedary oak notes. The mid-weight structure is fine & silky, the tannins smooth & tooth-coating. There is a little chalky grip & cedar notes at the finish. Very deep to opaque ruby-red color. The nose has a medium to full intensity, but the dark-fruit is quite closed - tobacco-leaf, tar & mint aromas showing instead. The palate is powerful & deep with redcurrant fruit overlaid by notes of raisins & chocolate. Acidity is balanced allowing the red fruit to overlay the fine, firm structure on the finish. Alcohol is balanced & the wine's harmonious finish lasts very well. 11/93 DCAMW

Deep, dark ruby-red, is opaque. The nose has a good intensity of deep, dark brooding cassis fruit overlaid by coffe, tobacco & chocolate. The wine is dry with a good weight and a rounded warm texture. The dark fruit is initially quite closed & tobacco, leather & cedar notes predominating. Alcohol is balanced & the structured finish lasts well, the plentiful spicy tannins giving way to powerful ripe fruit at the end. Powerful, robust & ageworthy. 11/94 DCAMW
