Critic tasting note: (2003 vintage) "I can't tell you how happy I am to taste an Australian wine that doesn't have that odd acidified flavoured. The '03 389 is suitably dark and well wrapped in cassis, chocolate, vanilla and black pepper aromas without any green character. The mouth is ripe and supple as always with more sweet tobacco, chocolate and smoky, herbal black currant flavours. A very fine effort. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe)." - Gismondi on Wine

The 2003 growing season in South Australia was generally regarded as warm, starting with a dry winter and a warm, clear spring. This was followed by some episodes of heat through the summer, whilst cooler weather towards the end of the season relieved the vines in the run up to harvest.

COLOUR Deep red-purple. NOSE Cherry, herb garden, dried plum, chocolaty, nutmeg aromas. PALATE It's big, rich, dense and tightly packed with plenty of sweet-fruit, plum, herb, nutmeg characters and fresh but solid tannins. It finishes grippy firm but there's plenty of flavour length. An early drinking style.

Current condition: Ready to drink
The 2003 Australian vintage was, overall, good.
Both the winter and spring experienced drought-like conditions which stunted vine development and reduced yields. Rain eventually fell in February just before the harvest which helped revive some of the vines. Although the ...
