1998 Petrus

Having not had the pleasure of this wine until recently, I managed to taste it twice within 90 days. Although this bottle was beautiful, it was just a little less interesting than the previous bottle. Still, there was a gorgeous, silky, opulent, sexy nature that came along with loads of energetic, pure, sweet, ripe, fresh cherries, plums, cocoa and a dash of herbs. Rich, full and long, this is also youthful. I am sure another 5 years will add even more here as it felt like the wine was still holding back its full potential. 98 Points

Ruby, thin brick rim. Scented, detailed, minerals, floral, exotic, blueberries, touch of figs and tobacco notes nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, elegant texture, seductive and nuanced, detailed, utterly charming and lively, long finish.

The 1998 Petrus goes from strength to strength as it ages. It's a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc. I was lucky enough to drink some over the weekend when a friend brought a bottle to dinner. It was stunning. It's so deep and characterful yet refined and subtle. It showed aromas of wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dry black olives came out as well. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Very fresh and just opening up now. Walnut and chocolate character. So youthful. Decant two or three hours before serving.

VINUM 1/2001 - Auch die grössten Weine der Welt sind nicht einfach statische Monumente, sondern oszillieren auf der Werteskala auf und ab. Doch manchmal bewegt sich auch diese. Soll meinen: Pétrus hat sich nicht verändert in den letzten zehn Jahren. Er hat sich einfach sanft, aber bestimmt der allgemeinen Entwicklung, dem Zeitgeist angepasst. Zwei, drei Jahrzehnte lang dominierte er klar und wurde in den 80er und 90er Jahren von seinen Mitstreitern eingeholt. Heute ist er allen anderen wieder eine Nasenlänge voraus. 1998 ist das Jahr, das die Entwicklung einläutete, die im genialen 2009er mündet. Einerseits ist er von der bekannten, beherrschten, ausgewogenen Art, die man von ihm kennt, wirkt noch verschlossen, so dass man auf keinen Fall eine Flasche davon opfern sollte (da gibt es jüngere Jahre wie 2003 oder 2007, die zugänglicher und früher trinkreif sind), andererseits ahnt man bereits diese neue Sinnlichkeit und Fülle, die er in den nächsten Jahrgängen zunehmend entwickeln wird, die schon fast burgundische Art der perfekten Balance von Frische, Mineralität und Fülle, wie sie der 2009er ausdrückt.
