This straight, entry-level Soave Classico DOC release from Pieropan is terrific yet again in 2023, showing unusually expressive aromas with a faint floral note, followed by orchard fruit notes recalling apricots as well as an undertone recalling baked apples. Generous, pleasingly fresh and versatile, it is made from the traditional varieties of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grown in family-owned vineyards situated in the Soave Classico region.

It is a rare but happy coincidence when the most widely available wine in a potentially excellent but still-underestimated category also happens to be among the very best. This straight, entry-level Soave Classico DOC release from Pieropan is terrific yet again in 2023, showing unusually expressive aromas with a faint floral note, followed by orchard fruit notes recalling apricots as well as an undertone recalling baked apples. A bit more concentrated than the norm among wines from this appellation but also unusually fresh thanks to vibrant acidity, this is delicious on its own but also very promising for pairing with lighter spring or summer fare. 92 Michael Franz

Every year Pieropan captures the soul of Soave, Garganega and the vintage in such a pristine way that it keeps us in awe. This vintage shines with aromas of Fuji pears, Anjou apples, lemon blossom and flint. The palate is crisp with green apple skin and lemon zest flavors that give way to toasted almonds, acacia honey and a minerality so deep that you might as well be in a quarry. Drink now–2040.

From the volcanic limestone soils of the Soave hillside comes a classic 85/15 blend of garganega and trebbiano di Soave. The vines are 6-60 years old, and the wine is certified organic. Pieropan is the maestro of Soave, and this wine, which sells for about $26-$30 in private wine shops, was made for Vancouver’s wealth of local seafood and a vast array of Asian/Indian foods. The purity of fruit flavours and complex almond notes make this the most interesting wine in the room. Bright, fresh, and food-friendly, try hunting this down. (Anthony Gismondi).

The price of this wine is enough to tell you that a fine Soave is still under-rated by both wine consumers and wine merchants. I like to think of the best of them as the Chablis of Italy, though the best are fewer in number than there are in Bourgogne Ouest. Fans of Chablis can taste their chalk, and fans of Soave can taste their volcanic cinders, but rather than delve into that argument after perhaps already setting one off by the comparison, let’s just say this is a delightful white – very lively with good minerality, flavors of green apples, crisp pears and a little lime with lively acidity and a touch of whey in the finish for gravitas. If you've ever shied away from Soave, or the garganega grape because it's boring or weak, you owe it to yourself to try the master: Pieropan. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1890s, and their estate covers nearly 60 hectares of organic vineyards, dotting the stony hills of Soave Classico. It is now run by the 4th generation, brothers Andrea and Dario. This, their youngest and freshest cuvée, is splashed with 15% trebbiano di soave. The destemmed grapes are native fermented in glass-lined cement tanks, where it remains on fine lees until the following spring when it is bottled. Fresh and bright over a bottom layer of fine wax, with subtly perfumed yellow fruits, grapefruit, candied meyer lemon lit with shining citrus pith and buzzy mineral notes. This slight white is such a charmer, and will continue to build complexity in your cellar short term. For now, partner with spring veg risottos and salads. (Treve Ring).

The fine name of Soave has been diminished over the years as high-volume production from lesser vineyard sites has dominated the appellation. The best Soaves, however, come from the original sites that first brought notoriety to the wines of the region. These classic, rather Classico Soaves, retain the vibrant and distinctive style that made the village famous. The Pieropan family has been making high quality wines for decades and their 2020 Soave Classico continues the tradition. This is an exuberant white wine, with lovely scents of apple, peach, lemon, lily, and subtle herbs. The flavors are refreshing and complex, with the panoply of citrus and peach nuances enhanced by elements of marjoram and lemon zest. (Wayne Belding)

This is a classic, riveting Soave, gleaming pale gold with the telltale greenish tints of youth. Certified organic, the wine is a blend of 85% garganega and 15% trebbiano di Soave, fermented traditionally in glass-lined concrete vessels. It has the excellent balance between generously ripe fruit and juicy acidity typical of the temperate region of Veneto in the northeast of Italy, where ample sun is offset by cool mountain air at night. Aromas and flavours read like a roll-call of ripe garganega: white flowers, apricot, almond, peach, and fennel with an underpinning of green apple and earthiness. A definitive aspect of the wine is the pungent twang of minerality imparted by the richly volcanic hillside soils in which the mature vines are planted. You’ll sense this in the lengthy, saline finish of this masterful Soave. Displaying an intricate dance of fruit and botanical savour, this is one of the great little less-is-more wines of the world, from the leading estate in the region, Pieropan. 'Food-friendly' may be becoming an over-used term, but this wine truly is supremely food-friendly. A worthy pairing would be Spaghetti Vongole. (DJ Kearney).

Im Duft könnte diese Cuvée aus 85% Garganega und 15% Trebbiano glatt als südlicher Riesling durchgehen, am Gaumen ist er dann aber vollständig Soave: cremig, mit wenig wenig Säure und feiner Würze. Die Pfirsichfrucht gelingt saftig, und im Finale endet der Wein angenehm zupackend mit leichter Adstringenz.

Every year, I look forward to tasting the new release of Pieorpan’s exquisite Calvarino Soave. Calvarino is one of the great vineyard sites of Soave. The Pieropan family has been making superb wines for decades and their 2017 Calvarino Soave Classico ranks at the top of their Soave bottlings. This is a pure and exuberant white wine, with lovely scents of lemon, tangerine, peach, flowers, and subtle herbs. The flavors are layered and complex, with the delicious tangerine, lemon and peach elements enhanced by subtle elements of herbs and citrus zest. Its rich, layered texture belies the reputation of Soave as a simple and light wine. If you’ve not had a great Soave, try this one. It will change your impression and delight your palate.
