Critic tasting note: (2020 vintage) "The 5th Element is a rugged red blend that mixes most of the Bordeaux varieties with a hit of syrah, but it is more South Okanagan in style than Australian. The final blend is based on selecting the best barrels after 18 months of aging in French and American oak. The style is rich, spicy, and savoury, with more blue and black fruit across the middle and end of the palate. The finish is a gathering of sweet fruit and slick, chalky tannins with more spicy oak to disperse in the finish. BBQ ribs will do fine now until this wine settles into itself in a few years. 2019 Vintage
Tasted: Sep 2021
Road 13 5th Element can be a rocky road of a red, and 2019 is no exception. The lead variety is merlot at 39%, followed by 37% syrah, 13% malbec, 7% cabernet franc, 3% petit verdot, and 1% cabernet sauvignon. The selection is a best barrels affair, although you could argue it may have been the biggest flavoured barrels. The blend is aged 18 months in 35 percent new French and American oak barrels before assemblage and bottling. Expect a rustic rich black and blue fruited front end with intense spice, smoked meat, and a dry, oaky finish. The syrah makes a big statement and suggests this will need a decade to calm down. 2017 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2019
The Fifth Element always has a wild, meaty side, and 2017 is no exception. A finicky year has resulted in a robust offering that comes in at a rare sub 15° of alcohol. The nose is slightly reductive, calling for a decanter to get some air on the wine for 15 to 30 minutes. The texture is medium-soft with a linear lilt mixed with cedar, earth, and warm black jammy fruit. The finish is long and persistent with a touch of spice, black tea, and sagebrush to keep it interesting. Best with roasted or grilled beef at the moment and the bigger, the better. 2015 Vintage
Tasted: Apr 2019
This wine is always a bit of a wild, southern monster loved by many and avoided by a similar amount who can't take the heat. A perfect vintage has left it with an abundance of structure and power, as well as its typical 15.1 percent alcohol. The attack is soupy with a cedary undercurrent, dimpled black fruit flavours and warm, summer’s day desert fragrance. The tannins are rich and spiced by the warm alcoholic finish. Best with rosemary rubbed lamb now or wait five years for it to settle down. (Anthony Gismondi).

With densely ripe, sweet black fruits, dark florals, tobacco, pitch and alluring roasted meats this blend of merlot, cabernet franc, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot packs a lot of stuffing. Fortunately, the structure is there to support it. Though this wine still presents youthful, it was built to last five plus years. Ample ripe tannins finish with black cherry and blackberry on a lingering, brooding finish. Pour with your grilled steaks. (Treve Ring).

Winemaker Michael Bartier pulled 26 lots from 279 barrels to blend his latest Fifth Element a mix of several south Okanagan red varietals. The fruit is ripe and dark with milk chocolate and cedar-y, pepper notes throughout with fine acidity. There a fair amount oak that leads to some dryness in the back end but it should dissipate over the next three years. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).
