Expert tasting note: (2021 vintage) "Mid-yellow in color. The nose shows ripe apricot & nectarine fruit followed by toasty oak. The palate's rounded, ripe apricot fruit initially marries well with vanilla oak. There are attractive notes of lime & lime-flower on the mid-palate, before the oak becomes a little drying. Slight alcohol warmth rounds out the finish, which has a pungent, crisp, lingering grapefruit nature." - 08/22 DCAMW

- Producer Notes
- This wine is produced from a vineyard owned by Tim and Angela Coddington, whose grapes have contributed to the blend of Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay since 1998. It is a vineyard that produces very rich and unctuous Chardonnay that we have long believed could make an excellent single vineyard wine. In 2006, we decided to give Coddington single vineyard status to reflect this vineyard’s unique character.

The winter of 2020 was relatively mild and dry. Spring came early again, but there were frosts to contend with in late September, one, in particular, causing damage to many of our Kumeu vineyards. Similarly, there were frost events at our Rays Road Vineyard in Hawke's Bay, but the wind machine we installed recently did the job, and fortunately, the damage was minimal. Flowering took place well ahead of normal, and it was apparent that the season would be very early this year. Conditions have been quite dry for a while now. Total rainfall in 2020 was just over 800mm, compared to the typical year of 1200-1400mm. Harvest commenced on 5 February 2021 for the Crémant production, the earliest we have started vintage in living memory. The growing season rainfall was only sporadic, maintaining the dry conditions, and the temperatures were moderately warm, hovering around the mid to high twenties right through the ripening season.
