2015 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2021
2017 Vintage
Tasted: Feb 2020
Beautiful white with sliced apples and minerals and hints of vanilla and cream. Some biscuit. Full-bodied, very focused and tight with a driven finish. Extremely long and lively. Bright acidity kicks in at the end. Lovely now to drink, but will improve with age.
2016 Vintage
Tasted: Apr 2019
Steel acidity lifts the oak and fleshy body of this reserve-worthy wine—the core of flavor built around lush, decadent flavors of honey graham cracker, baked apple and lemon meringue. The richness is rewarding and softly beguiling on the palate. Virginie Boone
2016 Vintage
Tasted: Feb 2019
Firm and fresh white with sliced apples, lemons, limes and hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, linear and tight with a firm finish. Needs time to open. Mostly Hyde vineyard and all Carneros. Better after 2019.
2015 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2018
This is a well-made, powerful wine. Elegant, integrated and effusive in oak, it has pretty apple blossom aromas and boldly layered flavors of green apple, crème brûlée and lemon meringue. The finish is lush in a honeycomb tone. This will do well in the cellar; enjoy 2020–2025.
2015 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2017
Aromas of cooked apple and pear with some vanilla and cream. Full body, layered and fruity. Fresh acidity and a crisp finish with underlying praline and dried lemons. Another delicious chardonnay from here. Drink now.
2014 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2017
Golden apple and honey flavors commingle on the palate, framed by high-toned acidity and toasted oak richness. Medium-bodied and moderately ripe, it offers a sophisticated, food-friendly and complex experience, capped off by nutmeg notes that linger on the finish.
2013 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2017
Toast with apricot jam comes first to mind in this nicely balanced white that begins in richness and evolves in the glass to offer a freshness of lime zest and grapefruit, the minerality well-defined.
2013 Vintage
Tasted: Mar 2016
They are calling 2013 an 'epic' year in Napa leading to an early harvest and perfect fruit. Look for a polished and sophisticated nose of full cream, fragrant sandalwood, roasted pear and custard. On the palate this Carneros chardonnay displays fine cloves, lemon curd and a fresh red apple acidity that keeps it linear and long. Ripe and rich, pour this concentrated chardonnay now with lobster or crab dishes, or let it rest in your cellar three to five years. An impressive effort and one for collectors. The fruit is whole- cluster pressed before the wine goes through a long, slow, cool native-yeast fermentation in 100 percent Burgundian-style barrels of which 61 percent are new. Battonage was done twice a week adding a quiet creaminess. After blending the wine spends thirteen months on its lees in neutral barrels. Good value. (Anthony Gismondi and Treve Ring).
2012 Vintage
Tasted: Oct 2015
Rich, ripe and polished, this full bodied Carneros chardonnay opens with subtle toast, lemon curd, cream and pear butter. The creamy palate expands to fill the mouth, with ample toast, lemon, heavy cream, hazelnut, lees and lemon pith piquancy to balance the heady fruit. Generous and quite lengthy, though the barrel use overpowers fruit at present, and the heat burns a bit more than 13.5 percent alcohol suggests. I would put down for two more years for maximum seamlessness, but drinking beautifully now with lobster or buttery crab dishes. (Treve Ring).
2012 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2015
Juicy in tropical mango, coconut flake and guava, this sophisticated Chardonnay is measured in texture and weight, the body lean with a touch of vanilla richness on the finish.
2011 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2013
Fine acidity and a bracing minerality, like a lick of cold steel on a winter day, mark this Chardonnay. It has oak notes, but they're wisely kept in the background, allowing the citrus, green apple and peach flavors to star. This beautiful wine continues the winery's string of great reserve Chardonnays, and is their best since the 2006 vintage.
2010 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2012
This bottling always strives to avoid a heavy hand and express more of a terroir-driven Chardonnay. This is bone dry, tart in mouthwatering acidity and complex in citrus, tropical fruit and herb flavors. It's not an opulent attention getter, but instead prefers to seduce through subtlety and nuance.
2009 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2012
Rich in tropical fruit and citrus flavors and generously oaked, this Chardonnay is made in the modern style, designed to appeal. It's dry and properly crisp, with a fine minerality, but is overworked. You can feel the heavy hand of the winemaker.
2008 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2011
Lots of oaky richness in this detailed, highly enjoyable Chardonnay. It's tart and savory in acid-tinged lemondrop candy, tangerine and Asian pear flavors, elaborated with sweet buttered toast. Elegant and upscale, a wine to drink now.
2007 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2010
Made in the modern style, this Chardonnay is very ripe and rich in jammy pineapples, green apples and limes, enhanced with smoky, caramelized oak and a creamy, slightly sour note of lees. It's fortunately balanced with crisp acidity. Best now and through 2012 before the fruit goes south.
2006 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2008
Over the years Mondavi's Reserve has taken a turn toward Chablis. Fans of lush, superripe Chards will find it tart, but it's really balanced and elegant. With a dry tang of minerals, it shows bright Meyer lemon, lime, pineapple and white peach flavors. One-third new oak adds creamy, smoky vanilla complexities. Should develop over the next six years.
2005 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2007
Right now my preference between Mondavi's Reserve and regular Chard is the regular. This is a better wine, from a classic Chablisian point of view, but it needs time. It's firm and deep in fruit, with an impressive minerality, and the balance for aging. Lay this Chardonnay down for two to four years as it gains some bottle complexity.
2003 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2006
Built along the same lines as Mondavi's regular Chard, this is an earthy wine whose fruit is restrained. It's sleek and elegant, very Chablisian in style, with a minerality through the finish. Should hold and improve.
2000 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2003
Smooth and distinguished, a flamboyant wine with enough flavor to last all day. Peaches, pears and tropical fruits are encased in lush, toasty oak, while lees adds a creamy, mealy texture. This classy wine is rich and balanced.
1998 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2003
Eleganter Speisebegleiter.
1999 Vintage
Tasted: May 2001
Very fine waxy lees aromas here with streaks of licorice citrus and pear throughout. On the palate the flavours are super rich and intense with green apple and citrus fruit dominating. The spicy creamy vanilla lees finishes crisp and clean. Excellent effort. (Anthony Gismondi and Stuart Tobe).
1998 Vintage
Tasted: Jan 2001
Another solid effort from Mondavi, the 1998 reserve shows fine structure and an attractive spectrum of citrus, peach, crème brulée and nut aromas and flavors that work in lovely harmony. It's full but not heavy, and balances fruit and acidity, sweetness and tartness, and light and full elements. The positive fruit, style and restraint are notable.
2001 Vintage
Big in fruit, oak and creamy lees, but expressively balanced. Pear and tropical fruit flavors are enhanced with smoky vanillins and buttered toast, while the acid-tannin structure is sleek and classic.
