The hillsides of Alexander Valley are home to this lush but vibrant cabernet that doesn't have the gloss of Napa but rather the umami, garrigue, and deliciousness of Sonoma. Red plums and dark berries, which winemaker Seidenfled describes as dried figs, give this wine a structure that pleases without scaring the drinker. It spends 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new), which you can sense but doesn't dominate while dissipating. Drink or hold through 2028. 2021 was a very dry season with approximately 15% lower yields than previous years, triggering higher concentrations of flavours. Impressive for the price. The 2020 Alexander Valley Cab is a 90/5/5 mix of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and malbec that spends 18 months in French oak barrels, of which half were new. Sonoma has a recognizable savoury dried herb, rosemary/sage/thyme nuance that enriches the wine. The Alexander Valley mix is a big step from the regular label in intensity and length on the palate. It's not super complex, but then, neither is it simple. 2020 was another dry growing season, with only a few spring showers, mild temperatures, and generally lower yields at harvest. Balanced and content on the vine, the fruit was harvested over 27 days from September 4 to October 1. It opens with lavish Sonoma flavours (thankfully less than Napa) of cassis, milk chocolate, dark plum, and ripe fig. Plenty of tannin and cabernet structure suggests ageing will be helpful for three to five years before it reaches its maximum drinking window. Polished and smooth, this is all you could want in a modern Alexander Valley cab. (Anthony Gismondi).

2018 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2023

For a time in the 1970s, California wineries were big on emphasizing estate bottling – a nod to their Bordeaux mentors – then gradually vineyard-designation wines became the new fashion of the 1980s. Rodney Strong – the man and the winery – was early on the scene with Alexander’s Crown, the first in that valley to have a place designation. I can’t say the wine has improved under newer owners, but it maintains its strong standing among Alexander Valley Cabernets. The 2018 is a very enjoyable one, and, as with most reds from the Valley, it is not at all overpowering, with a good blending of black fruits and mellow oak, some savory notes of garrigue and lip-smacking tannins. 2014 Vintage Tasted: Feb 2021

Packed with power and intensity this Cabernet is nonetheless well structured, which guarantees that its fresh fruits (notably blackberries) and hints of chocolate don’t get lost in all that brawn. Graceful tannins and a generous finish are further bonuses here. If I have one complaint it’s that the bottle is unconscionably heavy. When asked about this widespread environmental problem in the wine industry many producers (and/or their press agents) put the blame on consumers’ demands, but it seems to me that winery representative should shoulder the responsibility of educating the public about the fallacy that a heavy bottle signifies perfection and prestige. In fact, what these overweight bottles really represent is the largest share of the wine industry’s considerable contribution to global warming. (Marguerite Thomas)

This is an archetypical New World cabernet, combining confected, jammy black fruits with prominent sweet baking spices from aging in 50% new oak for 18 months. There's a sweetness to the attack given the ripeness level of the fruit, which has removed any herbal character, but it's still medium-bodied with some degree of freshness. The tannins are a touch astringent right now, so get the grill out if you open this over the next 1-2 years. (Geoffrey Moss MW).

I love the pretty cab nose of pure cassis and plum with mocha, coffee, chocolate and a caramel sweetness from assertive oak. Medium bodied, these grainy tannins add chew to the dark currant fruit and savoury grilled bell pepper character. Tannins are firm but very ripe, and compliment the glossy oak. Well behaved with everything in the right place, this full-bodied Sonoma County headturner is ideal for when you want a plush, authentic and fairly priced Cali cab that's not overdone or fiddled with. The fruit comes from the torid Alexander Valley in the northern zone of the appellation, and late ripening cabernet sauvignon reaches heady levels of flavour maturity here. Thankfully quite cool nights assure freshness and elegance. Stylish, structured, and worthy of a prime cut of grilled beef, you'd be hard pressed to find anything else in California that is this good, for this price. (DJ Kearney).

Rodney Strong was a fan of Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon as far back as 1971, when he planted Alexander’s Crown. Today they farm four different estate vineyards on the benches and hillsides on Alexander Valley terroir. Fine richness here, if a little less finesse than in 2013. The wine spends about 18 months in French oak barrels, 50 percent new. The nose is fragrant, showing dark plums, cassis, and spice with a hint of chocolate. The attack brings more warm, round, soft black cherry fruit flecked with espresso, blackberry, smoky vanilla and savoury, dried herb flavours. New world style but with freshness and style. For current drinking to mid-term drinking. Good value. Steaks anyone? (Anthony Gismondi).

Under the direction of winemaker Rick Sayre, Rodney Strong Vineyards has been among California’s most consistent performers over the past 25 years, routinely cranking out award-winning wines while keeping prices affordable. This Alexander Valley cabernet is but one of many examples you could point to. It has everything a cab lover looks for: richness and complexity without weight or too much oak, a supple mouth-feel that makes it enjoyable now, although it has tremendous potential to age, and, above all, a seriously high yum factor. Impressive from the get go with its deep colour and fragrant, spicy, black fruit and chocolate aromas. With its ripe dark fruit character, Rodney Strong’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon clearly reflects its origins, the Alexander Valley, the second warmest (behind Knights Valley) AVA of Sonoma County. The dense black fruit character is laced with allspice and other exotic notes. The 15% stated alcohol imparts roundness, which, along with plush tannins, makes it a good choice for current drinking with a big steak. (Michael Apstein)

Alexander Valley is not all warms some portions are moderated by cool ocean breezes and evening fog. The cabernet sauvignon is quite plummy with rich underlying black fruit and round tannins. There is youthful freshness here with spicy compost, dried herbs and milk chocolate undertones. Dense and rich but with a soft almost mellow 'Alexander' finish. Steaks anyone.
