Our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of grapes from select Napa Valley growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor. Our winemaker selects fruit that is similar in expression to the grapes from the Stags’ Leap estate, avoiding fruit from areas he considers to be too warm and instead sourcing grapes from the southern part of Napa Valley, where the climate is cooler. This strategic sourcing ensures the focus and character for which Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignons are known.

The first several weeks of a wine’s life are crucial. While the grapes for this wine were undergoing fermentation and maceration, our winemaking team tasted and tested each lot daily to determine the pump overs regime, how much air the wine needed, and the best temperature to optimize maceration and extraction. After pressing off the skins for 3-4 weeks, 35% of the wine went into new French oak barrels while the remainder went to seasoned French oak; this combination preserves freshness and gives the fruit more room to express itself.

A deep, brawny character in this full-bodied wine is nicely tempered by polished tannins and complex flavors. Aromas of toasted oak, blackberries and grilled sage lead to blackberry, blueberry and black olive flavors that are shaded by cocoa, espresso and sage notes. Best from 2028-2040.

A very polished cabernet sauvignon with currants, chocolate, and hazelnut. It’s medium- to full-bodied with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Very long. The texture and flavor stays with you for a long time. One for the cellar but fun to taste. Better after 2025.

Lovely aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, ground spice and anise. Full-bodied with fine, silky tannins. Juicy and vibrant on the palate with lovely balance and intensity. Drinking well now, but can definitely age. Drink or hold.

A very pretty cabernet with very fine tannins that are polished and fresh. Beautiful currant, chocolate and walnut character. Medium to full body and a long, caressing finish. Builds beautifully at the end. So delicious now, but will develop nicely in bottle. Real 2018 character. Top vintage. Try after 2024.

Tasted: Feb 2021
The Stags' Leap Cabernet is built around valley floor fruit from cooler pockets in the south. It's still Napa through and through, with rich cassis and blackberry, backed by mint and toasted baking spices after aging in 37% new French oak for 20 months. It's medium-full bodied and nicely structured, with firm, fine-grained tannins and enough freshness to make it all work. Some time in the cellar will allow the oak to further integrate, but there is lots of appeal to its youthful fruit. Smartly priced. (Geoffrey Moss MW).

With small amounts of Merlot and mixed reds, this wine is thick in tannin and bright in red fruit, with complementary characteristics of graphite, clove and cedar. An elegant midpalate of balanced weight lens to a soft, graceful finish. Virginie Boone

This shows lots of beautiful fruit with blackcurrants and boysenberries and there are also fine tannins that give it form and tension. Medium to full body. Lovely, fine tannins. Pretty intensity of fruit at the finish. Drink or hold.

2014, which was excellent, looks like a baby compared to this massive 2015 effort. Big, rich, dry, and peppery, this leaves nothing to the imagination. If you are a fan of big Napa reds, this is it, and frankly somewhat rare from French-born winemaker Christophe Paubert. Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon fans will be attracted to the big minty, black fruit that is honestly too powerful to enjoy at this point. It is going to be an 8-10 year project in the cellar, save for the odd test with a grilled steak from year to year. (Anthony Gismondi).

Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon fans are going to like this generous, serious red that overcomes the ripeness with earthy, savoury, spicy, white pepper, counterbalancing the rich fruit and tobacco flavours. Winemaker Paubert is a master of oak, integrating it into the wine to the most positive effect. Impressive cabernet and it's just getting started. Steaks anyone? (Anthony Gismondi).

A wine with purity and definition. Ultra-fine tannins hold together a red with subtle berry, walnut, forest floor and mushroom character. Very fine indeed. Better in 2020 but so beautiful now.

Rounded by small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this Cab is earthy and lean on entry, before developing in the glass into juicy dark cherry and leathery notes. Smooth, integrated oak and tannin leave an impression in terms of texture, with a persistence of tannin on the finish.

Dense cassis, cigarette tabacco, blackberry, dust, stone. Fine cedar spice and graphite-grained sticky tannins prop up the concentrated and elegant black fruit. Lovely savoury edge throughout. Drinking now well, but will gain complexity with another few years. (Treve Ring).

This tastes and feels a little gritty, with dry tannins. There's something old-fashioned about it, in an era of lush, sweet Cabernetss that appeal in their youth. A rich core of blackberry and black currant suggests that time in the cellar will be rewarded. Hold until 2017 or so.
