If you have ever wondered what cabernet smells like when perfectly ripe, this 2018 Stonestreet would be the one. It is always a mix of the best cabernet sauvignon grown at Stonestreet’s Monument Ridge and the Mayacamus Mountains, at the 5100 acre Alexander Mountain Estate. Only 900 acres are planted in 235 individual blocks. Savoury and aromatic, translation Alexander Valley, the fruit sets the stage for a slick, robust, muscular cabernet packed with blackberry, black licorice, menthol, smoke, and tobacco. In 2018, the weather gods cooperated, and this wine has risen to a quality level that reflects its price. A splash of petit verdot is aged 20 months in 35% new French oak. Again, you could drink this wine now, but I recommend cellaring it through 2028 for best results. (Anthony Gismondi).

Always a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Monument Ridge, Mayacamus Mountains, sites at Stonestreet. The savoury aromatic Alexander Valley fruit sets the stage for a rich cabernet packed with blackberry, black licorice, menthol, smoke and tobacco, and dense, sticky tannins with a touch of orange. The Estate Cab is always a mix of the best vineyards, virtually all mountain sites. Think sturdy, intense, savoury fruit that somehow winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs tames into a relatively supple affair. The fruit is black and plummy with dusty, slurry tannins rich in savoury, black cherry, and studded with orange and liquorice. A mountain wine but with a lot of style for the price. Nowhere near ready to drink before 2023. The fruit grows between 400 to 2,400 feet above the valley floor, 76 miles north of San Francisco and 23 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Individual vineyard block fermentations go through a 5-day cold soak before a stainless ferment, and 18 months in 37 percent new French oak. (Anthony Gismondi).

The attack is savoury and raw at this point, with minty plummy raspberry fruit and firm tannins. The palate is relatively supple, with long, linear flavours and tannins and a bittersweet chocolate/coffee finish. Needs time in the bottle to unwind and gather itself. The fruit is grown between 400 to 2,400 feet above the valley floor, some 76 miles north of San Francisco and 23 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Eleven months down the road from my last tasting, winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs’ cabernet sauvignon remains impressive, if a little softer. The fruit, hand-picked and cold soaked for 3-5 days before 18 months in 32 percent new French oak, appears to be pushing through the ageing now. It’s definitely pure Alexander Mountain black fruit (cherries and plums) with a refreshing blackcurrant addition and savoury, dried herbs. The acidity remains bright and lively at this point, tempering the intense mountain fruit. The tannins are softer in 2014 and you feel it now, but it will still age effortlessly for a decade. The 5100 acre site has 900 acres planted to grapes in 235 individual vineyard blocks. (Anthony Gismondi).

For fans of Cabernet that maintains its herbal charms. I love the focus on sage as a contrast to the Alexander Valley red fruit profile, with touches of dried herb, spice and chocolate that are seamlessly integrated and finish long and bright thanks to supple yet structured tannins. A short decanting or 5 years or so in the bottle will make this a go to accompaniment for an herb encrusted prime rib of beef. (Rich Cook)

There is no shortage of cabernet mountain tannins here that will persist for a decade. Lean, lithe and proudly New World this should keep a few folks in Napa Valley up late. There is something going on at Stonestreet if the 2012 "Estate" Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is nay example. The winery has issued a number of single cuvées that come off sites ranging from 500 and 2,400 foot elevations. The estate is 95/5 mix of cabernet sauvignon with merlot and malbec. Although its spends 17 months in 30 percent new French oak the fruit is fresh and linear with floral, mineral highlights. The palate is intense and chiseled with firm tannins, dark cherry/plum fruit and spicy chocolate notes in the finish. This is just a baby. Hold through 2018 or serve with grilled steaks. Big spicy, tarry, peppery, tobacco, leather, blackberry jam aromas with black olive, herbal notes. Dry, somewhat lean entry but lacks a bit of mid palate concentration. Very dry tannins with vanilla, cassis, peppery, spicy, licorice flavours and a bit of coffee, smoky olive on the finish. Pretty tough and lean now and reminds us a bit of Barolo.
