Medalla is a blend of different vineyards in the upper area of the Mendoza River, beside to the riverbank, a traditional area for Argentine wine. The source was vineyards that are an average of 50 years old. This brand has been made since 1983, always from the same area, and this malbec is a good example of a place, the sensation of black fruits, ripeness, and succulent flavors that fill the mouth. One to learn what the malbec that conquered the world market was like, before colder areas in the Uco Valley emerged on the Argentine scene.

Fine dried herbs, minty dark chocolate, roasted chili pepper, stones and blackberries on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied palate with fine-grained tannins and a solid, flavorful finish. Textbook malbec that hit the sweet spot between ripeness and freshness. Drink now.

Tasted: Jul 2023
Ripe plums, violets and bay leaf form an inviting nose that's complemented by a dash of dark chocolate. This is a classic Malbec from Mendoza's Primera Zona. A ripe palate offers plum, blackberry and hints of tobacco. Thanks to a smart use of oak the wine preserves freshness and has a balancing acidity lifting up the flavors. Tannins are firm, providing support and a silky texture.

This wine is made in a classic Malbec style with lively acidity refreshing the palate. On the nose, it offers subtle ripe cherry and plum aromas that lead to black fruit flavors on the full-bodied palate. Chocolate and coffee notes add to its complexity. It's a smooth and enjoyable wine.

A very fragrant malbec here with lots of crushed blueberries, stones, blue flowers and wild herbs. Lavender and violets. The medium-bodied palate has lots of juicy red and blue fruits. The tension and the chalky tannins are very noticeable on the palate. Really well-balanced. Fantastic value for the money. Delicious now, but can hold very well for five to six years.

Purple plums, blueberries, herbs, charred bark and oyster shells on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine, fleshy tannins. Succulent fruit with a savory and mineral quality, too. Delicious now.

Aromas of violets, plums, blackberries and lemon zest. It’s medium-to full-bodied with sleek tannins and bright acidity. Fresh and smooth finish. Drink now.
2016 Vintage
Tasted: Feb 2021
From Tupungato inside the Uco Valley, Trapiche is working with old vine malbec now over forty years old. The nose is a polished mix of fresh berries and violets with a savoury, umami-like undercurrent and vanilla streaks. The palate apes the nose with supple textures and sweeter black fruits. It is slick and generous, but at five years old, beginning to wear out. It is fully ready to drink. Winemaker Daniel Pi ages this big value red for 18 months in French oak. Steak, anyone? This is one of the best bottlings of this I have had with dark-berry, dark-tea and slate character on the nose and palate. Full-to medium-bodied, tight and finely tannined. Solid finish. Impressive.

Blackberry, black licorice and campfire aromas lead to a fleshy palate that's full but with gaps. Blackberry, dark plum and cassis flavors are standard for quality Malbec from Mendoza, while this is chocolaty on a finish that doesn't evolve. Michael Schachner
