The 1982 Chevel Blanc has a medium garnet-brick color and springs from the glass with scents of kirsch, dried cranberries, and pencil shavings, leading to hints of rose oil, rare steak, and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is packed with mature red fruit and earthy layers, textured with satiny tannins and delivering seamless acidity, finishing on a long-lingering mocha note. Still very youthful, this was clearly a very good bottle, coming directly from the Chateau. The yields in 1982 for Cheval Blanc were a whopping 55 hl/ha, according to Pierre Lurton.

A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cheval Blanc has a medium garnet-brick color. It explodes with an amazingly complex array of fragrant earth and exotic spice scents, leading to a core of raspberry preserves, cherry cola, dried mulberries, and violets, plus hints of licorice, iron ore, and unsmoked cigars. The palate is gracefully styled and medium-bodied with layer upon layer of fruit, earth, and perfumed spice flavors, framed by silky tannins and beautiful tension, finishing long and minerally. Phenomenal!

The medium to full-bodied palate is taut and energetic, delivering a firm backbone of exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and great tension, finishing long and shimmery.

All the plots but two made it into Cheval Blanc 2015. Those two were sold in bulk and no Petit Cheval was made in that year. With 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet colored 2015 Cheval Blanc prances out with a gorgeous perfume of roses, spearmint, and black tea, before giving way to a core of chocolate-covered cherries, redcurrant preserves, and juicy plums, plus a waft of iron ore. Full-bodied, the palate is dense and muscular, featuring a fine frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with loads of floral and mineral fireworks. Stunning!

The 2016 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 58% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and has a deep garnet-purple color. It needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock a powerful, profound nose of cassis, black raspberries, and stewed plums, followed by suggestions of Indian spices, fragrant soil, crushed rocks, and menthol, with a touch of violets. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright, energetic and gracefully styled, featuring youthful blackberry layers and loads of mineral and floral sparks, with a fine-grained, beautifully ripe texture, finishing long and earthy. A blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Cheval Blanc has more Merlot than usual as some of the young Cabernet Franc that would normally be used was not suitable this year but the Merlot was outstanding! It has a deep purple-black color and a pH of 3.7. The nose is very closed and tight to begin, needing a lot of swirling to coax out notes of plum preserves, black cherry compote, and blueberry pie, followed by suggestions of pencil shavings, clove oil, candied violets, cast-iron pan, and fertile loam, with a waft of wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate is locked-up tight, with loads of layers, bound with a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. It will need a lot of time!

At Cheval Blanc they lost 40% of the crop to frost in 2017 and couldn't use any of the second generation crop in the end. The final blend for the 2017 Cheval Blanc was 56% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet in color, it flies out of the glass with a fantastic array of gregarious scents - Morello cherries, mulberries, and raspberry coulis - plus suggestions of lilacs, cinnamon toast, vanilla pod, and chocolate box. Medium-bodied, the palate shimmers with beautiful energy and freshness, framed by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed. So pretty!

It exhibits lift and vibrancy, along with intensity and purity. This is a classic, firm, and fresh vintage for Cheval Blanc that is long, vibrant, and provides tension, length, and purity from beginning to end. The key to this year's vintage was the willingness to make strict selections, as well as allowing grapes from 37 parcels into the blend, ensuring a true representation of the vineyard. As you can see, this is one of the stars of the vintage. The wine is made from 48% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12.8% ABV, 3.61 pH. The harvest began September 18 for the Merlot, finishing their Cabernet Franc on October 3. Drink from 2030-2055.

48% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Nez profond et frais, avec une très légère pointe acidulée se mêlant au floral et au fruité, ce qui donne offre une excellente vivacité aromatique en plus d’un caractère distinctif. Il y a aussi un côté sapide dans ce vin qui secoue la vibrance du fruité. Ce dernier se retrouve bien contrebalancé par un très subtil et délicat voile de menthe. Très belle concentration en bouche, mesurée, nette et fraîche, avec une magnifique texture qui offrira rapidement un superbe velouté, parions-le enivrant dès sa première tranche de vie. Joli regain sapide en fin de bouche qui permet une très belle cohérence tannique, très progressive, et s’allongeant en fin de bouche avec éclat. Un millésime 2024 qui propose un très beau classique à la large plage de dégustation ! 98-99/100

The tannins are fine & dusty/silky textured with a smoothness like cocoa powder. Beautiful acidity lifts the dark fruits, making them juicy on the finish. The alcohol is balanced by concentrated fruit. The wine is medium-bodied with a fine tannic structure. The finish is long & lively. 11/24 DCAMW

Medium to deep ruby red color is not opaque. There are lovely toasty oak aromas over red-fruit on the nose. The palate has a superb freshness. Pure, juicy, fresh, cranberry fruit adorns the palate. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a very fine, silky, tannic structure that manages to have good grip. There is a lovely long, fine, elegant finish with fine, well-integrated cedary oak notes. The intense, opaque black-purple wine loses no color to a black-purple rim. Black-fruit aromas open to reveal perfumed, exotic oak spices. Fine silky & graphite smooth tannins are well-married to the fruit in a long, harmonious finish. Intense ripe black-fruit on the palate is beautifully balanced by good acidity. Notes of cedar & licorice open on the mid-palate. Alcohol is in balance and the wine finishes with a good girm tannic structure providing good grip - the structure gives the finish good length. 11/98 DCAMW

The dark-fruit on the palate is tightly structured & but shows watery touches. The wine is astringent at present, but is not over-extracted. Acidity is lively, alcohol is balanced & the fruit is closed, leaving the finish short, however there is clearly intense fruit that is will open with time. 11/01 DCAMW
