Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the Northern end of the appellation with heavy exposure to the Mistral. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown here since the sixties.

When to drink: 2025 to 2035

Malgré un millésime exigeant, voilà un vin qui ne se contente pas de remplir le verre: il s’invite, s’impose, puis règne. À la fois noble et indompté, il incarne ce que le Rhône Sud peut offrir de plus authentique. Derrière le Château de Beaucastel, il y a la Famille Perrin, artisan du vivant, héritiers discrets mais exigeants d’un savoir-faire rare. Et dans ce millésime 2021, la partition est jouée avec une précision d’orfèvre. Au nez, c’est une symphonie épicée: tapenade, poivre noir, cuir fin, violette, touche de garrigue — le tout enveloppé d’une fraîcheur presque mentholée. Loin des excès solaires, il respire l’équilibre. En bouche, c’est charnu, mais pas pesant. L’attaque est souple, puis le vin s’élargit, monte, s’installe. Les tanins sont serrés, jeunes, mais polis comme un galet roulé. La mûre, la cerise noire, une pointe de figue sèche s’invitent sans ostentation. Puis, viennent des notes de truffe, de graphite, presque fumées. La finale? Longue. Saline. Avec cette tension qui donne envie d’y revenir. Le 2021 de Beaucastel, c’est l’élégance dans la retenue, la force dans l’équilibre. Une leçon de style. Passer en carafe ±1 heure et servir à 16 °C. Magnifique avec le tournedos Rossini, le canard aux cerises noires, l'agneau rôti, le filet de chevreuil sauce grand veneur, ou avec le tajine d’agneau aux pruneaux.

Tinto composto a partir de 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault e os 10% restantes de Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc e Roussanne, com estágio de 12 meses em foudres de carvalho francês. Mostra-se estruturado e concentrado, mas também fresco, fluido e refinado, com frutas vermelhas e negras maduras no ponto certo, sustentadas por acidez refrescante e taninos firmes e finos. Ainda jovem, suculento, tem final persistente e cheio de camadas, com toques de ameixas, de amoras, de tabaco, de ervas, de especiarias, de tabaco, de grafite, defumados e terrosos. Está ótimo agora, mas tem tudo para ficar ainda melhor nos próximos 20 anos.

Southern Rhône red wines can enchant the senses with an enticing array of fruity, floral, earthy, herb and spicy elements. Château de Beaucastel is an iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer. The 2021 Beaucastel offers the sensual pleasures we seek in southern Rhône reds – pleasures we can enjoy now and for years to come. It is a blend of many grapes, but Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Counoise comprise most of the mix. It captivates with its combination of luscious ripe fruit, flowers and spices. The bouquet reveals strawberry, blackberry, and cherry fruits followed by hints of lavender, marjoram, Asian spices and cinnamon. On the palate, the layers of ripe strawberry and blackberry fruit are enhanced by the exotic floral, dried herb and spice tones. While certainly robust and thoroughly enjoyable now, the 2021 Beaucastel displays a fine balance and elegance that will repay cellaring for another decade and beyond. 94 Wayne Belding

The intoxicating and thrilling 2021 Chateau de Beaucastel is a marvelous blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Counoise, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut and a range of other allowed varietals. It is dense and rich, showing hoisin sauce and bacon notes alongside shades of dark currants, tobacco leaf and salty minerals. Medium to full-bodied, this is on the graceful and elegant side for this wine — but is absolutely sensational to drink right now. This will surely live on past another decade.

For a vintage that was very closed at the beginning, this is now so effusive and sensual. The hint of salted caramel beautifully complements the rich red fruit character. Also notes of licorice, cinnamon and star anise. Rich and full-bodied, but very elegant and silky. The power is underplayed, but there's no mistaking the stunning concentration and finesse. Meaty, spicy, flowers, thyme, and peppery, dark red berries pop in the nose. On the palate, the wine really shines, due to its larger than usual percentage of Mourvedre in the blend. Concentrated, rich, lush, deep and intense, you find a minty, peppery edging to the red berries on the mid-palate and in the long, salty finish. The wine blends 35% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and various other AOC allowable red wine grape varietals along with 10% white wine grape varietals. Drink from 2024-2040.

The 2009 Chateau de Beaucastel combines 30% Mourvèdre with 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counties and 5% Cinsault. Showing a deep core, this offers an entirely different flavor and aromatic profile than the ’08. Roasted figs, anise, dark currants and suggestions of tilled soils all mark the nose. The palate comes off very fresh and refined with a seamless texture. Intense and still showing a deep core of red and dark fruits, with a bright underlying acidity, this is beautiful wine that will show well for another decade.

The 2011 Chateau de Beaucastel is a beautiful blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah (30%) with the remainder other Rhone varietals. This smells beautifully perfumed with suggestions of red rose petals, white pepper, Provencale herbs and hints of smoldering stones on the nose. The palate comes off very fresh and lithe, with a polished texture. Layers of ripe salmonberry and boysenberry combine with salty and stony undertones on the palate. Very complex, this is finesse-driven and delicious wine to consume now and over the next seven plus years.

The 2012 Chateau de Beaucastel is a nothing short of a magnificent effort from this challenging vintage in the southern Rhone. The 2008 Chateau de Beaucastel comes off very herbal and medicinal on the nose with dried red fruits alongside bandaid and wet stone notes. The palate is very fresh and lithe with a polished texture and seamless mouthfeel. Loaded with mouth-watering acidity, this shows a dizzying array of sour and dried red fruits that mingle well with kumquat and shades of garrigue. Powerful and very well structured, the tannins still very present, but the overwhelming impression is of elegance. Very long, dry finish with plenty of stony minerality. Quite great Rhone. The blend makes for a uniquely balanced expression of Chateauneuf as always from Beaucastel. I blind tested a quite capable friend within wine biz, and he guessed barolo, which I quite agree. Very balanced at the moment 92-93p
