Critic tasting note: (2023 vintage) "A seamless pairing of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) and Shiraz (49%) sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Barossa Valley. A busy amalgam of aromas bustling and bright in black cherry, blackcurrant, bergamot aromatics, fine spices, allspice. Friendly as always, this Bin 389 is not so much about pushing boundaries (as some have done in the past with oak) as portraying classic Penfolds style fashioned around an even integration of fruit, tannin and oak. The palate is elegant, generously bodied in blue fruits, red berries, red currant, fine herbs, thyme, oregano, gentlest of spices and vanillin influences. This is the wine that helped forge Penfolds' reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. They were amongst the first to do so in 1960. Elegant, deep fruit flavours, fresh acidity, balanced tannins, rich and soft. Perfect with Sunday roast.
Pungent cassis, coconut and cabernet. Grippy tannins. Rich shiraz and austere. Great combo.

Tasted: Jul 2025
This wine has been made every vintage since 1960. Refined, generous and polished aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, cured meat, crushed stones and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with a rounded, textural palate and ultra-refined tannins that lead to a silky, savory, black-fruited finish. 51% cabernet sauvignon and 49% shiraz. Excellent. Drink or hold.

A near even split of cabernet sauvignon (53%) and shiraz (47%) from across McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, and Padthaway. This is aged in the barrels used for the previous vintage of Grange (American hogsheads, 37% new), earning it the nickname "baby Grange." The cabernet component shines right now, offering cassis, graphite, lavendar, and minty herbs, alongside a backing of peppery spice, eucalyptus, and brambles, all framed by cedar, vanilla, and dill. It's a remarkably dense, concentrated wine, that's just beginning to open up. Give this a vigorous decant or tuck away for a few years for this to be at its best. (Geoffrey Moss MW).

This opaque Cab-Shiraz blend needs plenty of aeration before revealing its charms. When it does, it's led by blackberry and blood plum with undercurrents of charred root vegetables, coffee and licorice, and a lick of toasty oak. Tightly wound, chalk-dust tannins make room for the supple fruit on the dense, shapely palate. One for the cellar, this should really start to shine in another 7-10 years.

Ruby. Cassis, dark fruits, blackberries, fruits, liquorice, scented and lifted, nuanced, layered and detailed, refined. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, juicy, fruit driven, layered, nuanced, lively, detailed, energetic and long. A beautiful 389.

The 'mini Grange', as it is known. Robust, with a core of molten raspberry, blueberry, tea leaf and anise, juxtaposed against something that feels cooler and fresher and compelling enough to reach for the next glass. Very Australian of feel. I have had old vintages of this, some very old. They are inevitably a rewarding experience. The generous oak framework, apposite in lieu of this latent wine's immense potential. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

An almost even split of Cab and Shiraz, this is a muscular, reticent red you could cut with a knife. Plump plum and blackberry aromas are followed by peppery, dusty spices and chocolatey oak. Tannins are powerful and sinewy, wrapping around the tongue like a vice, leaving just enough room for the dark fruit to shine. Drink 2024–2034.

Dark ruby in colour with purple reflections and subtle brightening on the ochre rim. The "Baby Grange" is still a little buttoned up on the nose at the moment, with delicate aromas of nougat and fig, underlaid by cranberry with some pleasant fine oak spice and a touch of eucalyptus in the background. The palate is subtly fresh with integrated tannins, juicy, ripe cherry and a citrus-minerality on the aftertaste. Still young this needs further bottle ageing.

Very rich, ripe and intense, this has plenty of depth and is one of the strongest statements of Penfolds’ house style. Rich vanillin and sweetly spicy American oak on the nose, with chocolate, blueberry, violet, blackberry and iodine notes. The palate delivers quite approachable and supple texture, smoothly fleshy and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry abound. Deep and ripe finish with nutty tannins to close. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

‘Baby Grange’ is used as a moniker for Bin 389 primarily because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange, i.e. one-year-old American oak. Wood aside, 389 has always been crafted as red wine with the structure you expect from a cabernet but the richness you find in a great bottle of shiraz. In 2019 the mix is 53/47 cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. It is a multi-regional blend involving Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, and Barossa Valley. This spends a year in oak (25 percent new). The winemaking team talks about black forest cake as a marker for this red, so if it didn’t have your interest before, it may now. Coffee, cola, chocolate, and spice penetrate the wine through the finish. It’s the textures that attract, so lush and smooth but all balanced by the appropriate acidity that keeps it fresh and humming along the palate. There is no rush to drink this wine; it will easily age for a decade and likely for another one after that. It is a very good 389. (Anthony Gismondi).

Shows a very strident, oak-driven nose with cedar and spice that’s overlaid on ripe blackcurrant, red plum and cherry. Pepper and cocoa powder, too. The palate has a sinewy feel with intense summer berries and plums, as well as strong blackcurrant character. Curated to a brazen style with strong tannins. A blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon and 47% shiraz, matured in American-oak hogsheads (300 litres - 25% new). A blend of Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and Barossa Valley. Drink over the next decade. Screw cap.

In typical Penfolds style, this Cab, Shiraz blend is a rich, polished wine lacquered in high-end oak. Lurking beneath the barrel-driven furniture polish, mocha and spice notes is a plush layer of berry fruit and a minty, herbal nuance. The alcohol shows some warmth on the gauzy palate while woody tannins cinch the fruit. A wine for chewing rather than sipping, this will requite a mega amount of protein and several years in cellar. Deep dark ruby, opaque core, violet glints with paler hues at the rim. Scents of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, a hint of aniseed, peppermint followed by pleasant spiced wood tones. A very complex and inviting bouquet. Taut, elegant, ripe cherries, enchanting sweetness flanked by very well-integrated tannins, white pepper, and a hint of ginger in the aftertaste, mineral-saline finish. The most cellared red wine in Australia is 389, and 2018 marks its 60th vintage. It is an intricate blend of fruit that follows the season: cool years are heavily slanted to Barossa and Mclaren Vale, and the warmer years tap southern vineyards. In 2018 physiological ripeness favoured all regions, and winemaker Peter Gago and the squad took full advantage, picking the 57 percent cabernet sauvignon, 43 percent shiraz from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Robe and Wrattonbully. All the fruit was aged in American oak hogsheads, of which 38 percent were new. That is a new high, signalling the quality of the 2018 fruit. The rest of the used barrels are usually passed down from the Grange program. Gago calls this year backward and one to wait for and less forward than many of its predecessors. Everything deepens to an amazing black forest cake lookalike on the palate (a 2018 marker according to the winemaking team) with more cherry, blackcurrant, and blueberry. Rich, powerful, and showing some oak but in its finest form, supporting not dominating. It will need a decade or more to round into form and begin to express its vast potential. Yes, you can drink it now, but why open your bottles? Drink a friend's first. You can drink this now or for the next 30 years. (Anthony Gismondi).

A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz, this has a very impressively complete feel, a hallmark of the 2018 vintage wines, and there’s a myriad of characters with cabernet’s cedary and gently herbal notes sitting atop a core of rich red-plum and dark-berry shiraz fruit aromas. So integrated. The palate has a very silky texture, so plush and polished with a wealth of rich and intense dark-plum, dark-berry and blackcurrant flavors. The oak is completely soaked with ripe, fresh fruit. This is a great Bin 389. Drink over the next two decades. Screw cap.

Bin 389 has often been referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, partially due to the fact 389 was aged in some of the same barrels that housed the previous vintage of Grange. This is reported to be the second most cellared wine in Oz, after Grange. First made in 1960 by legendary Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert, this was the wine that proved the structure of Penfolds cabernet sauvignon worked with the richness of their shiraz. This vintage is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Shiraz, from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, and Wrattonbully. The wines aged one year in American oak hogsheads (29% new). Blackberry, wild blueberry, black cherry, dark plum, and black peppercorns flood the dense, compact palate, framed with leathery, firm tannins that wrap around the weight and girth of this 14.5 degree declared red. Still very young, this needs more time to unravel itself. If drinking now, decant well in advance and pour with roast beef or lamb. (Treve Ring).

This wine is a classic Aussie blend of Cabernet and Shiraz. Flashy, oaky, rich and built for the long haul, it leads with prominent cola-like barrel influence, followed closely by blackberries, violets, dried savory herbs and a baseline of fire roasted vegetables. The palate is ripe and powerful but balanced. The oak again a star player, but fairly well integrated with the plush fruit and structured, herb-flecked tannins. Don't touch this any time soon.
