Expert tasting note: (2001 vintage) "Deep, dark ruby-red is all but opaque. Dark cassis & cherry fruit is restrained, what shows is new oak and cocoa. Dark fruit is brooding & the good acidity gives it some liveliness. There is plenty of well-handled oak creates a good structure with nice crunchiness. The flavors last well. This is a nicely balanced wine which is currently introverted, but which will be spectacular with time." - 11/05 DCAMW

After a rainy, warm winter, the budburst was early. May and June both brought above-average temperatures and very light rainfall. After a wet spell in early July, hot, dry weather then settled in until the harvest, resulting in a very high quality crop.

I really like this style as it off great LLC character in a forward style. Tobacco, mocha, blackberries, cassis, cigar wrapper and wet forest aromas open the nos. Medium/full-bodied, regal, yet elegant, soft, and structured, the wine is juicy, fresh, vibrant and leaves you with a refined version of classic Bordeaux. This is drinking just great today. There is a beautiful sweetness and lift in the finish. This is a better version of the 1985. The wine blends 69% Cabernet Sauvignon 19% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV, 94 Points

A very typical Las Cases with a Pauillac note, even though it’s St.-Julien. Lead pencil, dried herb, currant and black olive. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and creamy with a long finish. It’s very persistent. Pretty austerity. Be sure to decant this a couple of hours in advance. Drink or hold.

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breitere Randaufhellung. Zart kräuterwürzig unterlegtes Kirschenkonfit, etwas zurückhaltend, Edelholznoten. Saftig, elegant, angenehme reife Herzkirschen, wunderbar balanciert, bereits sehr zugänglich, ein delikater Speisenbegleiter.

A classic in development, a wine that will last for decades. It is certainly powerful, but already the shape is finalized, with its plums and berries settling down with perfumes, acidity, just enough tannins and a warm, welcoming richness. A great argument for the superiority of 2001 over 2000.
