Expert tasting note: (2005 vintage) "This is deep & dark in color & is more or less opaque. The nose has dark fruit & is tight & cedary. The palates black fruit is tight & supported by graphite notes & is dominated by tight cedary oak characteristics. The tannic structure is concentrated, lovely, long, lean & toasty in style. The long finish displays an excellent balance between acid & alcohol. The flavors las exceptionally wel. This is a wine that will need a lot of time to open." - 11/09 DCAMW

- The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the former Léoville estate. These terroirs are located mainly in the Clos Léoville Las Cases, which you pass as you leave Saint- Julien village for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60ha producing Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases and have been widely recognized for years.

The buds burst at the beginning of April, after a dry and rather cold winter. The blossoming began in the last week of May in good weather conditions and was quick and even on all the grape varieties. The hydric stress became more visible throughout June, stunting the growth in the young grapes and limiting their size early in the summer. The colour change was quick and even and the bunches continued to ripen through August which was still very dry and sunny, although not excessively hot. These ideal conditions resulted in very concentrated and perfectly balanced grapes.

The 2005 Leoville Las Cases is a blend of 87.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.6% Merlot, and 4.8% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-brick in color, it explodes with black and blue fruit preserves notes before giving way to a spray of creme de cassis, hoisin, Indian spices, and crushed rocks scents. The medium-bodied palate is finely knit with elegantly styled, fragrant black fruit and earthy layers, supported by firm, densely pixilated tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and opulent. At a sweet-spot in its evolutionary curve, poised between fruitiness and a tertiary spice bomb, this is gorgeous right now, although it will cellar easily to 2055+.

Mittleres Rubin, noch violette Reflexe. Tiefgründige Nase, Mokka, Tee, Kirschen, darüber getrocknete Rosen, Veilchen, floral und fruchtig, gleichzeitig sehr steinig. Im Gaumen gradlinig, opulent, konzentriert, dicht, knackige Frucht, feine Gerbstoffe, top Säure, einerseits noch wild und fast etwas ungestüm, doch mit der Luft baut dieser Wein herrlich aus und zeigt im Abgang eine ausgezeichnete Länge. Hier ist alles an seinem Platz. Jetzt, dekantieren, bis 2040+

This is a super wine, that in time, should go up in score. But patience is needed here. Decanted 4 hours, that was not enough to tame the strict tannins. Still, it was impossible not to enjoy the perfectly ripe, regal, red and black fruits, intensity, length and concentration found here. This is was the older British writers called good breed. I get their point, even if the term is archaic. All that being said, perhaps, this will be ready between 2025-2030 for the start of its long, 100 year life. 98 Points

A stunningly complex and complete nose of flowers, dark fruits, and minerals. Very perfumed and subtle at the same time. The palate is full, yet tight and powerful with perfect tannins and a long, long finish. The quality of the tannins is phenomenal, please leave this alone for ten years. Pull the cork in 2020.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, schwarzer Kern, violette Reflexe, in der Nase einladende reife Frucht, feiner Nougat, faszinierende Präzision. Am Gaumen transparente Frucht, ein Wein von großer Finesse, Frische und Komplexität, rotbeerige Nuancen, seidig-süße Tannine, herrliche Länge, ein perfekter Wein, der mit knapp 13 % Alkohol auskommt. Grandioses Lagerpotenzial, zweifellos in Premier-Cru-Qualität.

95-97 Barrel sample. A big wine with dense tannins, but so elegant. Dark, intense, with layers of acidity underneath that only show through at the end. Unusually, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates this wine, a sign of the ripeness of the Cabernet fruit.
